Where does Bogotá's
reclaimed wood go?

Every year Bogotá produces millions of tonnes of construction and demolition material — yet how much of it is wood, where it arises, in what condition and how it is used today, no one records systematically. That is exactly what we map: streams, typology and the higher-value recovery paths the available material allows.

The context

A large stream — with a blind spot

Construction and demolition material (RCD — Residuos de Construcción y Demolición) is the city's largest residual stream. The mineral fraction (concrete, brick, asphalt) makes up 75–85% and is increasingly recorded. The non-mineral remainder of 15–25% contains the wood — and it is exactly this part that is barely broken down in the statistics.

Origin

Four streams — where the reclaimed wood comes from

The city's usable wood doesn't arise in one place but is spread across four very different sources — each with its own typology, quality and logistics.

Stream 1

Construction & demolition wood

Largest volume. Arises directly on building sites and at demolitions.

  • Formwork boards, beams, battens, door and window frames, floorboards, packaging wood
  • Predominantly Pinus patula and eucalyptus
  • Hotspots: Suba, Kennedy, Engativá, Fontibón; high-end projects in Chapinero/Usaquén
  • Contamination: nails, concrete residue, paint, high residual moisture
Stream 2

Craft & joinery

Many small workshops (ebanisterías), often informal.

  • Offcuts, leftover battens, end pieces from solid wood
  • Around 83% of workshops dispose of or give away their offcuts
  • Clean, dry, sortable — but small quantities per workshop
  • Board and composite materials have to be sorted out here
Stream 3

Industry & packaging

Pallets, crates and strapping from logistics and production.

  • Standard dimensions, readily available, often pine
  • Sawing and milling waste from the furniture industry
  • Watch the origin stamp (treatment of industrial pallets)
Stream 4

Sawmills & forestry

By-products of wood processing on the city's periphery.

  • Slabs/side boards, sawdust, planer shavings
  • Bogotá itself has no forestry — supply from Boyacá, Cundinamarca and others
  • Format and quality vary widely; more distant sources
Status quo

What happens to the wood today

Most reclaimed wood today falls to the lower tiers of recovery — or out of it entirely. Value held in the material is lost in the process.

The gap: No organized player today brings reclaimed wood back up to the tier of certified, load-bearing construction timber — even though a substantial share of the material would allow exactly that. This loop is simply missing.
The core question

What the typology allows

Not every stream can return to the same tier. What matters is the condition, dimension, wood species and contamination of the available material. The typology determines how high a piece can re-enter — the goal is to raise every stream to its highest possible tier instead of shredding or burning it wholesale.

Tier 1

Direct reuse

Intact components in a suitable dimension — highest retained value, smallest intervention.

Tier 2

Upgrading to load-bearing timber

Solid wood of sufficient quality that can be worked up and certified — back into high-value construction.

Tier 3

Material recycling

Material that can't return as load-bearing (boards, composite, more heavily contaminated) — board material instead of loss.

Tier 4

Energy / compost

Only clean residual wood that allows no higher path — the last tier before landfill.

The assignment is an initial assessment. The actually usable share per stream — and thus the economic potential — will be determined in the physical material analysis.

Approach

What we clarify next

The open points are answered not at the desk but through physical analysis of the material. That is the core of the next phase.

  1. Actual wood fraction (t/year) in the construction and demolition stream (RCD)
  2. Usable share: how much is really recoverable at higher value?
  3. Dominant wood species per stream
  4. Distribution of formats, cross-sections and lengths
  5. Local intake prices — what do today's buyers pay?
  6. Geographic concentration: which districts produce the most?
  7. Seasonality of quantity and quality (rainy seasons)
  8. Share of informal, undocumented streams
Framework conditions

The tailwind

Regulation already points in the right direction: the national RCD decree (Resolución 1257/2021) prescribes a clear hierarchy — reuse before recycling before energy before landfill. Bogotá's Decreto 507/2023 sets circular targets for the construction sector and drives demand for certified secondary materials. Our work starts exactly at the top of this hierarchy — where the least happens today.
